My Korean Grammar & Usage Note #6: -는 것 -ing

We can change a verb into a noun by adding -는 것 directly to the verb stem, regardless of whether the verb stem ends in a vowel or a consonant (with/without batchim).

01 -ing

Verb + 는 것

듣다 (to listen) 듣는 것
보다 (to watch) 보는 것
하다 (to do) 하는 것
찾다 (to find) 찾는 것
만나다 (to meet) 만나는 것
먹다 (to eat) 먹는 것

02 Irregular forms

Irregular form ‘ㄹ’

알다 (to know) 아는 것
만들다 (to make) 만드는 것
살다 (to live) 사는 것
놀다 (to play) 노는 것

03 Examples

춤추는 것을 좋아해요.
chumchuneun geoseul joahaeyo
I like dancing.

요리하는 것을 좋아하세요?
yorihaneun geoseul joahaseyo
Do you like cooking?

04 The shortened forms

Verb + 는 것 + subject marker 이 = Verb + 는 게

피아노 치는 것이 어때요?
= 피아노 치는 게 어때요?

춤추는 것이 재미있어요.
= 춤추는 게 재미있어요.

Verb + 는 것 + object marker 을 = Verb + 는 거

읽는 것을 좋아해요.
= 책 읽는 거 좋아해요.

영화 보는 것을 싫어해요.
= 영화 보는 거 싫어해요.
