Korean Alcoholic Drinks: Seol Joong Mae Plum Wine

‘Seol Joong Mae Plum Wine’ (설중매 매실주) is a sweet Korean alcoholic drink made from plums picked in Gwangyang and Suncheon, well-known plum production centers, and produced in bottles which allow the beverage to be seen. I have purchased wine lately at the wine shop because I discovered that moderate alcohol consumption is good for health – reduced risk of developing heart disease, strokes, gallstones, and possibly, reduced risk of diabetes. “Moderate” alcohol consumption, as defined by the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, means a maximum of one drink per day for women and two for men. A standard serving of wine is 5 oz (about 150ml); however, it being a sweet dessert wine, a standard serving of plum wine is only 4.1 oz (about 120ml). Plum wines may offer certain health benefits, but only when you enjoy it sparingly.

Seol Joong Mae has ranked first in the plum wine category in the Korea Brand power index (KBpi) surveys by KMAC for three consecutive years. Seol Joong Mae Plum Wine is typically served chilled as an aperitif. It has a sweet taste and yellowish in color. The fruit’s natural taste and scent are maintained by applying low temperature leaching method and by cooling and filtering the initial product in a temperature of 8 degree Celsius or lower for more than 10 days. Seol Joong Mae Plum Wine (375ml) contains 14% alcohol and several healthful substances, including essential minerals and antioxidants. It had a moderate total antioxidant capacity, similar to those of cherry and raspberry wines, but less than wines made from grapes or blueberries. Essential minerals including calcium, magnesium, manganese, zinc, iron and especially potassium were also present in the wine. Plum wines were found to contain significantly less headache-inducing histamines than red wines.
