Penang Bridge Marathon | Largest Marathon in Malaysia

Penang Bridge Marathon is a highly anticipated and most sought after sporting event in Malaysia. The marathon is now considered to be an institution in Malaysia. It is the only time of the year where the iconic Penang Bridge is closed for vehicles and open for runners to enjoy the breathtaking view. There were a total of 48,000 runners this year, compared to 34,500 last year and 28,000 in 2011. Each year, the amount of runners surpasses the previous years. This year will be the third consecutive time that the Penang Bridge Marathon receives certification from the Malaysia Book of Records as the “Largest Marathon in Malaysia”. The marathon was initially planned to be held on the Second Penang Bridge but due to unforeseen circumstances, the run was held on the first Penang Bridge again. It is said to be the last edition held at the first Penang Bridge before shifting to the Second Penang Bridge next year. The Penang Second Bridge is expected to be completed this year end.

Penang Bridge Marathon

This year, the marathon also attracts international runners from 71 countries as far as USA and Africa. 50% of the runners are from out of state, mainly Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Kedah. This has brought a positive impact to put Penang as the regional map of must-see places. The Penang State Government has always been an aggressive advocate for healthy living. Aside from the marathon, there are also various sports events such as dragon boating, triathlon and other endurance sports which promote a healthy lifestyle. This is also reflected by state policies which uphold the vision to make Penang “Safer, Cleaner, Greener and Healthier.” Please take this opportunity to enjoy the beautiful state, especially the UNESCO heritage zone, affordable shopping and world famous cuisines.
