English Grammar Rules: Word Classes or Parts of Speech – nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc.

There are eight different kinds of word in English. They are called ‘word classes’ or ‘parts of speech’. Some words can belong to different classes depending on how they are used in a sentence.

Verb A word that express an action, an event, or a state. eat, sleep, walk, run, go, look, think
Adjective A word that describes a person or thing. good, bad, big, small, young, old
Adverb A word that adds more information about time, place, manner, cause or degree to a verb, an adjective, a phrase or another adverb. quickly, slowly, today, tomorrow, here, there
Pronoun A word that is used instead of a noun. I, they, you, we, he, she, it
Preposition A word used before a noun or a pronoun to show place, position, time or method. at, on, in, to, from, under, above
Conjunction A word that joins words, phrases or sentences. and, or, but, so, because
Determiner A word that introduces a noun. a, an, my, our, this, the
